BUSINESSES-CITY OF TROY Troy is one of the oldest communities in Madison County. In the second half of the 19th century, a stagecoach route was established through Troy, making it a favorite resting place for travelers. When St. Louis Vandalia Railroad replaced the stagecoach, Troy remained a favorite stopping point. Today it remains an important destination for those in the trucking industry. As Troy expanded South, the significant increase in population resulted in incorporation in 1857 and city organization in 1892. Figures represent continued growth from a population of 1,260 in 1950. Those figures climbed 41.1 percent to 1,778 in 1960; another 20.5 percent to 2,144 in 1970; and 75.9 percent to 3,772 in 1980. As of July, 1995, Troy's population stands at 7,329. The older sections of Troy are tree-lined with neatly trimmed lawns, showing the pride residents feel for their home and city. Newer subdivisions offering homes in a wide variety of styles and price ranges are found throughout the city and its perimeters, making easy commutes for those who work at nearby Scott Air Force Base and downtown St. Louis. ![]() The city of Troy has an aldermanic form of government. To provide municipal government representation, the mayor, treasurer and city clerk are elected at large, while the aldermen are elected by ward. The city is divided into four wards with two aldermen representing each ward. The Troy municipal building is located at 116 E. Market St. just 1.6 miles from the intersection of H-162 and H-70 or H-55 on the North side of Market. |
